Its gasket in the lid creates a watertight seal which makes it waterproof when locked down and helps to keep odor contained. The top opening of the compass measures 20.5mm diameter though the depth cannot be measured without the removal of the compass. One drawback found in the reviews is that some have received the product with missing latches. Although the compass in some boxes does not seem to function, the box is functional enough to hold a significant amount of weight and valuable gear. It is recommended to keep the gaskets oiled but in minimal quantities.
