- J.R.R. The first children's story written by Tolkien.In 1925, four-year-old Michael Tolkien lost his favorite toy dog on the beach. JRR to console his son Tolkien made up a story about a dog named Rover, who was turned into a toy by magic, and his search for a wizard who could restore it.During his adventures, Rover, or Roverandom as he was later known, encounters a sand wizard, a fearsome dragon, the king in the sea, and the Man on the Moon. Although Roverandom, cleverly woven and adorned with word games, was initially planned to be published in the same year as The Hobbit, in January 1937, the work could not be published because the publishers wanted a sequel. Tolkien began writing The Lord of the Rings instead. Roverandom was finally published in 1998.Lord of the Rings fans will enjoy the influences of Norse mythology and Tolkien's wonderful sense of space. -The Times - Edited by Christina Scull and Wayne G. Hammond, this edition contains a foreword detailing the story's relationship with Tolkien's other works, The Hobbit, The Silmarillion, and Letters from Santa Claus.
