What is the ARB RD166 Air Locking Differential?

The ARB RD166 Air Locking Differential is a high-performance differential designed to enhance the traction of your 4x4 vehicle. It features an air-operated locking mechanism that allows the driver to engage or disengage the locking function, maximizing grip in challenging off-road conditions. This is particularly useful for traversing slippery surfaces like mud, snow, or rocky terrains where wheel slip may occur. By keeping both wheels on an axle turning at the same speed, it significantly improves your vehicle’s off-road capability.

How does the ARB RD166 work?

This differential operates using compressed air to lock and unlock the gears inside it. When activated, it locks both wheels on an axle together, ensuring they turn in unison for optimal performance. The activation mechanism is typically controlled by a switch on the dashboard, allowing for seamless transitions when needed. This system is vital for off-road driving, enabling better traction during sudden obstacles or slippery conditions.

What vehicles is the ARB RD166 compatible with?

The ARB RD166 Air Locking Differential is specifically designed for certain 4x4 vehicles, particularly those with a Dana 30 Axle. It's ideal for off-road enthusiasts looking to enhance their vehicle's capability. Always consult your vehicle's documentation and include modifications that may be necessary for installation. It's essential to ensure compatibility to allow full performance and reliability in rugged conditions.

Is installation of the ARB RD166 complex?

Installation of the ARB RD166 requires moderate mechanical knowledge and skill since it involves disassembling the axle assembly. It’s generally recommended to have the differential installed by a professional mechanic or an experienced off-road enthusiast. Proper installation ensures the locking functionality operates correctly and maintains optimal performance, ultimately leading to better off-road experiences and safety.

Can the ARB RD166 be used on highways?

Yes, the ARB RD166 can be used on highways; however, it’s best utilized in off-road conditions. When the locking mechanism is engaged, it’s advisable to disengage it when driving on paved roads to prevent tire wear and maintain safe handling. For optimal performance, users typically activate the lock during off-road adventures and revert to normal operation when driving in regular conditions.

What are the advantages of using the ARB RD166 over conventional differentials?

The main advantage of the ARB RD166 over conventional open differentials is its ability to provide maximum traction by locking both wheels together. In situations where traction is uneven, such as split surfaces or off-road obstacles, it minimizes wheel spin, allowing you to maintain momentum. This proactive approach to traction management significantly enhances your vehicle's performance in off-road scenarios, making it ideal for adventurers and terrain explorers.

How is the air system for the ARB RD166 powered?

The ARB RD166 air-locking mechanism operates using an onboard air compressor system. Users can install an ARB Air Compressor that allows for convenient inflation and actuation of the locking differential. This not only powers the locking mechanism but can also be used to inflate tires, making it a versatile addition to your off-road gear. Having the compressor readily available ensures you can easily react to changing terrain conditions.

What maintenance is required for the ARB RD166 Air Locking Differential?

Maintaining the ARB RD166 involves periodic inspections for air leaks in the locking system, fluid changes, and ensuring that the air compressor is functioning well. Regular checks on differential fluid levels and quality are essential to keep the system efficient. Proper maintenance enhances the longevity of the unit and ensures optimal performance during off-road use, providing peace of mind for users frequently engaging in challenging terrain.

What type of lubricant should I use with the ARB RD166?

For the ARB RD166 Air Locking Differential, it is recommended to use high-quality gear oil that complies with the manufacturer's specifications. Look for lubricants specifically designed for use in differentials, ensuring they provide adequate protection and performance under various driving conditions. Proper lubrication is crucial for the smooth operation of the differential and to minimize wear and tear on the internal components.

The ARB RD166 Air Locking Differential is a reliable off-road equipment for your car. It is compatible with Dana 60 with 35 spline axles and 4.56 & up gear ratio. It will fit on the 9.75" Dana 60s that came on the front or rear for the F250/350s of certain years. However, for the 9" Ford, you need to order either RD119 for 31 spline or RD99 for 35 spline. Overall, the product is great for anyone who loves off-roading.
